Freezer-Only Challenge Wrap Up

I did it! I got through the whole month without buying any meat and only using what was already in the freezer. The Freezer-Only Challenge was actually much easier than I expected.

My worry was that I wouldn't be able to figure out what to do with what was in the freezer. Or, that I'd want to make a certain dish but not have the meat for it. A few days along the way I did have to adjust what I'd wanted to make based on what we actually had. Really, the hardest part was staying away from that sale meat.

Even after a month of cleaning out there is still lots of meat left in the freezer. None of it is falling down on my head now or toes now, though. What I'm running low on is ground turkey and chicken (we don't eat much ground beef). This challenge taught me that I use those most often so that's what I really need to stock up on regularly. Ground meat is very versatile and used in so many recipes. Being a cheaper cut (is it really a cut if it's ground up?) helps the budget, too.

Now that the challenge is over I want to keep the freezer manageable. I'll still be stocking up during big sales (meat is so expensive otherwise). I just won't do so to the point I'm getting injured trying to get something out.

How did the challenge go for you? Did you make it? Is your freezer more manageable now?

  2. This is a great challenge to master! We don't eat a whole lot of meat, but our garden veggies stock up in the freezer and it's hard for me to keep to the system of first in, first out!

  3. We don't really keep that much meat in the freezer on a regular basis. I do like to keep ground turkey and chicken tenders on hand though. I like the idea of cooking what we have because we do have plenty to choose from. Sounds like a nice creative challenge with great rewards for the budget.

  8. We have a lot of stuff in the freezer. Committing to using what you have is a great idea! Plus, it doesn't last forever (even though it seems like it does when it is in there frozen!)

  10. Thanks for sharing! We have been trying to use up what is in our freezer. It's amazing how much money you can save by using up what you already have first. I haven't purchased meat in a while as I'm still using up the stock in my freezer.

  12. We don't but meat in bulk because we live near the market. We buy them as needed. Sometimes a bit inconvenient though when it rains! LOL

  13. I love this fantastic idea, but I am sure this is going to be a big challenge to stay without buying meat, as my husband is a meat lover. Hopefully would love to take this challenge & see how it works as clean organizing is so important as well.
